Kedir Hassen has worked in coffee throughout his entire adult life. Starting as a coffee farmer, Kedir now oversees a number of coffee washing and drying stations in Southern Ethiopia. He does this under the company name Sibu - an Afaan Oromoo word that refers to a style of coffee cherry preparation in which the coffee is roasted in the cherry and then fried in butter for consumption. Established in 2014, Buliye Station is not a washing station that also produces naturals, but rather a drying station only. That is to say, this station only produces naturally processed coffee. It is located at roughly 2,150 masl and purchases cherries from farmers that come from the neighboring kebeles of Buliye, Wamana, Borticha, and Dabaye. Roughly 200 farmers deliver cherry to Buliye. In addition to these 200 farmers, Kedir has Buliye farm which is roughly 28 hectares in size. The station has 300 drying tables, 50 of which are shaded in order to slow down drying and produce a truly top quality coffee. This is our importer Osito's first year partnering with Sibu. In addition to Buliye, we purchased Guracho, a washed lot from another station owned and operated by Kedir. The 2021-2022 season was challenging for farmers in Southern Ethiopia. Ripening rains did not come as they almost always do. This meant that a lot of coffee cherry did not develop properly, or at all. Many producers in the South really struggled to make excellent coffee. The fact that Kedir and his team delivered such excellent quality during such a challenging year makes us so excited to see what the future of this partnerhsip holds!
