Drip Roasters

The Chepnorio Farmers Cooperative Society now consists of 900 farmers, whereof 94 are women and 102 are members of the so called Youth Group. The cooperative was founded back in 1985 and has since grown significantly from 50 members to a respectable size. At the beginning, they produced a mere 150 sacks of green coffee per year, which was sold at very low prices. Today, the co-op produces more than 15 times the amount each year. And the quality has improved, too. Due to these reasons and because they are now able to conduct the primary processing on their own processing sites, they are able to receive more than 10 times the amount they used to be paid. Their fourth processing site was opened in 2017 and the cooperative has bought a tractor to help with transportation during the harvest. The coffee is handpicked before it's being delivered, often by tractor, to one of the four factories, where it is sorted and soaked in tanks overnight. Drying is done on raised beds. Due to the rainy season most coffee is dried in covered green-house like structures. We found this coffee through Vava Coffee, a certified B Corp founded by Vava Angwenyi in 2008. The social enterprise is committed to contributing to better future prospects for both local communities and the coffee industry as a whole. Vava Coffee’s vision is to challenge the status quo and promote positive social and economic disruption within the Coffee industry. Vava provides sustainable livelihoods for the smallholder coffee farmers involved. This coffee is roasted rather light, as it is sweet by nature and creates a very pleasant acidly with a slightly sparkly feeling in the mouth. It reminds us of stone fruit, mostly (red) plum and cherry, and red berries. The floral note is best described with lavender. The acidity is intense, however, it's not a typical lemon-y type of citric acidity, but somewhat more juicy.
