Matas de Minas coffee is characterised by quality craftsmanship, picking by hand and techniques developed by the region’s producers to produce an exceptionally high quality. The result is a diversity of nuances and flavours, contributing to the reason behind many prestigious national and international awards. This coffee is traceable to a single farm (Sítio do Boné) located in the protected origin of Mantiqueira de Minas region known for its rolling hills and uneven terrain. Producer Vanderlei Paulo Martins was born, grew up and now lives on the farm, continuing his family’s work with coffee. Sítio do Boné measures 40 hectares, with 20 hectares of coffee only. All management is done by the family. Historically Located in the municipality of Araponga, State of Minas Gerais, Sitio do Bone was named after the chief tourist attraction of the region (the Bone Peak), which also has several waterfalls with crystal clear waters and high altitude, excellent for the production of specialty coffees. The farm was acquired by Vanderlei Paulo Martins from his father, Mr. Raimundo Martins, in 1998. Since then he has been involved with coffee plantations, taking advantage of the excellent soil conditions, cold climate, altitude of 1200m and location. In addition to coffee growing, Vanderlei Paula Martins and his father cultivate the practice of tourism, maintaining the property clean and respecting nature, offering places for camping and meals (Remanso Bone). From the farmer: “We bought a small farm and we started planting coffee, we gradually expanded the area. Me, my children and my grandchildren have always worked together and we are delighted to grow high-quality coffees, we are winners of various competitions in the region.” Natural coffees – those which are picked and dried unprocessed in the whole fruit before milling – have long been the preferred method in Brazil, but only recently have they caught the attention of quality-conscious roasters.
