Our wonderful Yirgacheffe is back! We were able to taste and offer this gorgeous coffee by the Adado cooperative last year and we managed to buy it again. It is processed as a «natural» and grown in Daro Kebele next to Aboole river in the Bule District. It won our hearts with its amazing fruity aromas and a sweetness that reminds us of brown sugar. Hints of cocoa and spices in the nose make it a beautifully balanced, yet nuanced cup. The cooperative unites almost 1'300 smallholders, of which more than 200 are women. It occupies around 185 workers during harvest season and is part of the Yirgacheffe Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union (YCFCU). The YCFCU acts as a trader for its member cooperatives and takes care of sales and marketing. It further invests in the community with various projects, e.g. building a school, improving infrastructure for the people to reach isolated areas, running up workshops and meetings for its members. All cooperatives that are part of the YCFCU are located in the Gedeo Zone in southern Ethiopia. Two other coffees in our range have been delivered by the YCFCU: Haru and its successor Worka, which we roast for espresso, have both originated from different member cooperatives and have been sourced through the YCFCU. These coffees of the native varieties Kudhume, Welisho and Dego are certified with the Fairtrade and organic labels at origin. They are sorted by hand, sun-dried and covered overnight as well as during the hottest hours of the day for protection. The drying process can take up to 30 days. With the YCFCU's own trucks, the coffee is brought to Addis Ababa, where it goes through various quality checks before it's exported and then reaches Europe by way of Djibouti.
