Latin American grown Geisha coffees rose to fame in Panama when Hacienda la Esmeralda separated the species of arabica and presented it at a 2004 Panamanian coffee competition. It ubiquitously blew the judges away with an inherent unique aromatic flavour profile. Terroir in coffee is critical and absolutely plays a major role in any variety of arabica. This Peruvian expression is grown in the Northern highlands and exhibits gorgeous dark fudgy notes with an ultra decadent booziness reminiscent of cherries soaked in kirsch liqueur. Sweet, floral aromas dominate the nose in the brewed cup. Think pear drop sweets. Farm owner Don Andres notes that his wife is often a little jealous that he seems to tend on his coffee plants more than her. Anecdotally this serves as a poignant reminder that growing excellent coffee is hard and laborious work. Unorthodox Roasters is privileged to roast this coffee and really showcase the sweet spot. Don Andres is always trying to make improvements to face the myriad of challenges in growing coffee. Climate change, lately, presents issues with too many hot dry days during the harvest. Thus, in recent years he has been planting shade trees to protect the coffee plants. He chose to plant Guava and eritrina poepigiana, also known as Coral tree. This plant is particularly beneficial because it is a nitrogen fixer in the crop area. Furthermore, installation of a drop irrigation system that guarantees plants can access sufficient water in hot dry days has ensured his crop can flourish during flowering and the harvest period.
