Cafés Lugat
Arcachon, France
The Chelchele farm, managed by Metad, is about 400 km south of Addis Ababa, in the Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples administrative region. It was created in 2013, over an area of 30 hectares, in the very heart of the Yirgacheffe appellation, known internationally for the quality of its coffees. Metad works with local farmers who provide him with their best cherries. Currently more than 2000 farmers from around Gedeb sell all or part of their crops to Metad. They develop land in altitude (around 2000 m) according to old and exclusively manual practices. The traceability carried out by Metad is done in a fine way, since it allows to know these peasants - united by associations in the kebeles. In Gedeb, Metad has installed a washing station at 2000 m. The altitude offers advantages in grain preparation. This coffee, which takes longer to dry, is also less damaged by insects, which are less numerous here. This results in better quality and more complex coffee in the cup. In addition, Les Cafés Lugat discovered a company involved in development projects that go beyond the framework of the farm and this approach has fueled the desire to work with them. Aware of the natural heritage of the Gedeo area, Metad promotes agricultural practices that are more respectful of the environment. In addition, it finances road construction as well as a primary school of 800 students in the vicinity of the washing station and which it fully operates.
