About This Coffee

Oscar is one of the younger farmers we work with, and with the help of his family at Las Lajas, he has produced another wonderful coffee this year. This is Oscar Chacón Cubillo’s fourth crop from Finca La Esperanza. After buying the farm six years ago, and spending much of the first two years renovating and replanting it, Oscar is now in full production. He has worked incredibly hard, with the help of his family (Finca Las Lajas), while also studying Information Technology at university. Like many farms in Costa Rica and further afield, La Esperanza does not have its own processing facilities. Once the coffee cherry is picked, it is transferred to Las Lajas and processed at the family beneficio. This practice is common amongst family groups of farms and cooperatives. For example, in Brazil, many of the Carmo group of farmers process their coffee at Fazenda IP, and in Bolivia Agricafe process coffee from their own farms and others they represent. Processing equipment is expensive and the facilities take up large amounts of space, so it makes sense to work collectively and benefit from economies of scale.
