Mwankumbi was established in 2016 as a cooperative for 44 small farmers in the village of Ihombe. The idea was born while cupping with friends when farmers in the area brought coffee for tasting. They talked about the challenges and problems of growing coffee, which led to the formal establishment of the cooperative in the following weeks. In recent years, the cooperative has expanded its membership, now with 161 farmers. In the first year, 15 tons of parchment coffee were collected, and in 2021 it was already 94 tons. The coffee is processed by each member of the cooperative and then delivered to the pickup station, where quality is assessed and the coffee is weighed. The cooperative organizes transport to mills, processing and sale of coffee. Flavor Profile We smoked our coffee from Tanzania as Omni Roast, which means it is perfect for brewing both sweet, juicy overflow and fruit, balanced espresso or coffee from a coffee maker. Curiosity An interesting fact hidden in this coffee is a genetic mutation called „peaberry”. As a rule, in the coffee fruit there are two seeds brought into contact with each other on the flat side. With peaberry coffees, there is only one grain in the fruit, which is very small and round – hence the name because it resembles peas. Peaberry coffees are said to be of higher quality, sweeter, with higher acidity and a more complex aroma. However, we leave this to you to judge!
