When the Croce family inherited a farm from his parents, they changed the name to Fazenda Ambiental Fortaleza. They decided early to transform the farm to something that was long-term sustainable for people and the environment. Bird Bob-O-Link, whose living and moving patterns were threatened by forest felling, one-sided crops of soybeans and corn, became a symbol that something must be done. The family immediately banned all types of environmentally hazardous substances, created "green corridors" for wildlife and preserve all water sources in the area. They started growing more types of plants including banana, avocado, mango and passion fruit for, together with the already rich surrounding forest, get a natural cycle and a rich fauna. Both for the sake of animals, but also to create an eco system that naturally minimizes the need to protect the coffee trees. Fairly quickly realized the family that even if they did everything in their power to improve the environment around them, it had a very little effect if their neighbors continued as before. Therefore, it was decided to try to expand their philosophy to the producers in the area. It resulted in a network of producers, all of which have the ambition to produce high quality coffee but also undertakes to take care of nature. FAF helps producers with training in harvesting technology, pruning and drying, but also economic assistance if needed. The network is greater every year, when more producers see the benefits that come with the work. Both for nature, but also because they get better paid for their coffee, which also creates sustainability for the families.
