Acacia Hills is a coffee farm in Tanzania run by 3rd generation coffee farmer Leon Christianakis who purchased the farm in 2007 (his original coffee farm passed down from his Greek grandparents now grows avocados for export.) Acacia Hills borders the Ngorongoro Conservation area which boasts the Ngorongoro Crater and adjoins the Serengeti National Park. Although rundown at the time of purchase, Christianakis saw the potential for transforming Acacia Hills into a quality-focused coffee farm that specialized in high end and distinct coffee varieties. As the highest altitude of any coffee farm in the region with ideal soil and growing temperatures, Acacia Hills was ready to bloom. They first focused on rehabilitating the Kent coffee variety that was already growing on the farm and then planted their first Geisha/Gesha lot in 2012, subsequently adding additional coffee varieties like Pacamara, SL-28, and Castillo. They have since doubled their coffee acreage from 150 acres to 300 acres and increased their workforce from 7 people to an average of 140 people daily. They have implemented a number practices that improve coffee quality including staff education (teaching the importance of picking only red ripe cherry and sorting coffees), the construction of shaded raised drying beds, and a quality control team that follows the coffee from pick to dry mill monitoring moisture levels and processing procedures. Leon also believes strongly in investing in his community. When he first purchased Acacia Hills, he noticed people walking four kilometers to fill up 20L containers of water. So Leon, together with several partners, developed a water infrastructure in Oldeani. They installed a water supply system on two farms and set up a pipeline that uses gravity to transport water to a water tank in the village.
