About This Coffee

The story of our Hamma Collective coffee is one of travel. Our journey begins with a fourteen hour flight to Addis Ababa, the capital city of Ethiopia. From there, we board a short flight south to Jimma. We then travel six hours east by truck, to find ourselves in the thickly forested city of Bonga. In and around Bonga, as far as 80 miles away, farmers known as the Hamma Collective harvest old heirloom varietals and bring them to Mahabub Awel for processing. Each family harvests an area as small as 1 to 2 hectares; their combined effort producing a sizable harvest each year. Ethiopia is the birthplace of coffee. We partnered with the Mullege company in 2017, gaining access to exclusive coffees from the Yirgacheffe region. Mullege is owned by the Awels, a prominent Ethiopian family with influence in multiple market segments. The Awel family is able to bypass the national coffee exchange system by owning their own farms, adding sustainability to their coffee enterprise. They provide housing, daycare, food and education to their workers. We have collaborated with Mahabub Awel on additional community projects, including improved clean water systems through the development of wells, or bore holes.
