Rwanda is blessed with ideal conditions for coffee growing, including high altitude, regular rainfall, volcanic soils with good organic structure that allow for abundant Bourbon. The vast majority of Rwandan coffee is produced by smallholders. They number about half a million and own plots of land rarely larger than one hectare per family. Coffee is grown in most parts of the country, with particularly high concentrations along Lake Kivu and in the south. The drive to Kilimbi Coffee Washing Station (CWS) from the capital Kigali is one of the most beautiful and scenic in Rwanda (and indeed the world). The only stations they feel can compete with this CWS in terms of sheer beauty are their little baby Shyira and the hidden gem Gisheke! Once past the majestic four-hour drive from Kigali to Nyamasheke district which is bombarded by thousands of lush green forests, typical Rwandan rolling hills, villages, coffee trees and much more.
