Despite its long coffee-producing history, Indonesian coffees are often overlooked within the specialty coffee industry. (Surprise! There are good coffees from all over the world!) So, we are extra jazzed to bring you this stunning Sumatran offering from Asman Arianto and his cooperative. Asman has been in the coffee producing game since around 1998. After 20 years in the industry, he wanted a way to unite and provide benefits for coffee farmers in the area and started the Ribang Gayo Musara Cooperative in 2018. Almost all farms on Sumatra are very small (approx 1-6 acres), so it can be hard for farmers to sell that coffee in such small quantities. The co-op not only provides a place for these small farmholders to sell their cherries, but also gives members higher prices for them, a share in the profits from premium lots, and training and outreach for farmers. Asman and his team are constantly expanding and pushing the boundaries of Indonesia's coffee possibilities. Most of the coffee in the country is processed using the âwet-hulledâ method, but Asman has been working to diversify the co-opâs processing methods. This lot of Ribang Gayo is fully washed, giving a more delicate side to typically full-bodied Sumatran coffees. As you sip this beautiful brew with notes of soft orange blossom, juicy red grape and honey, we hope you wonât overlook this outstanding offering from Indonesia.
