Father and Son Roger and Jose Alexander Ureña’s shared passion for coffee is only outdone by their love of the land around them. Third and fourth generation coffee producers respectively, they bring expert knowledge and deep care to the coffee they grow. Terranova is their second farm dedicated to rare microlot coffees. Planted the farm in 2018 with Gesha, Casiopea, and Ethiope 47. Its high elevation, excellent soil composition, and annual weather patterns combine for optimal producing conditions for top lots. The Ureña’s selection of the Ethiope 47 varietal for this lot play the unique flavor profile of Ethiopian landrace coffee with Costa Rica’s deep history of honey processing and the terroir of Tarrazu. Ethiope 47 presents the best fruit notes and complexity of African coffees– earning its rightful place among Gesha and SL-28 as some of the highest quality coffee being produced in the region. After harvest, the cherries undergo a 12 hour fermentation in tanks before partially pulped, leaving a majority of the flesh still on the seed. They are then sun dried on raised beds covered by a greenhouse for 15 days receiving constant attention This initial fermentation combined with the Ureña’s attentive fruit-heavy honey processing results in a unique mouthfeel and structured flavor presentation we find in this lot. The care and consideration behind it makes it one of Costa Rica’s finest.
