About This Coffee

We’re not exaggerating when we say this is one of the most stunning naturally-processed coffees we've tasted in years. If you enjoyed our recent "Costa Rica Las Lajas Natural," which was a Caturra variety, you will love this one as well!  Since Costa Rican coffees were our introduction to honey-processed coffees years ago, they will always be special to us. Honeys are fun as you can typically get a little extra body and sweetness compared to washed coffee, but they don’t have the fermented funk that so often plagues natural process coffees. A good natural will have some extra sweetness and a fruit-forward profile, and this one is no exception. It’s hugely sweet, super juicy, clean, expressive, and full of notes of blueberry, cotton candy, passion fruit, black raspberry, fruit punch, and cascara. Another reason why this coffee is so good is that it’s the SL28 variety. The “SL” stands for Scott Laboratories, which was a British-backed research organization based in Kenya in the early to mid-1900s. They did a tremendous amount of work selecting different breeds of arabica coffee with a goal of increased rust/disease resistance, tolerance to drought, high productivity, and high quality. SL28 and SL34 are the two most well-known varieties that came out of this program, so we are extra excited for this offering.
