Geisha became a global sensation when, in 2004, it won the Best of Panama competition and set a record for the highest price ever paid for a coffee at auction. Coffee lovers couldn't get enough of Esmeralda Geisha and it ignited a global "Geisha/Gesha goldrush" among farmers eager to produce a coffee with similar characteristics: layers of explosive tropical fruit and flowers with powerful aromatics. Prices continue to soar to greater heights at auctions every year. The 2021 Best of Panama winner sold for an astounding $2568/lb of green coffee! The Geisha/Gesha variety was brought to Panama in the 1960's by Don Pachi Serracin and he planted this at his farm in Jaramillo. This variety he also shared with his neighbor farms in the region. One of these being Hacienda La Esmeralda whom first brought it to international fame in 2004, and the other Mama Cata Estate. This Year we asked Jose David Garrido of Mama Cata estate if he could make a custom coffee for us using our 'Champagne Natural process' we developed in Hawaii. We shipped him yeasts and instructions and he began producing our batch in Late spring. He was quite impressed by the results as are we. The coffee is bright and sweet and complex, with notes of Hibiscus and Mango, but still allowing the classic bergamot and jasmine notes of the variety to show through.
