Umuraje is one of three stations owned by Epifani Mukashyaka. The woman restored the family farm, after the 1994 genocide, and took up its further development. Epifani founded Buf Café in 2003 and built the first Römer processing station. In 2003, the company bought coffee from less than 500 farmers, and now it takes berries from almost 7,000 farmers in the Southern Province of Rwanda. Now her son Samuel Muirwa also makes a big contribution to the development of the business. Buf Café provides more than 100 jobs at each processing station during the harvest, constantly supporting the cooperatives and their workers. At the end of each season, Buf Café shares any surplus profits with both the cooperatives it works with and the managers of its processing stations. Buf Café brought together farmers in several groups of 30-60 people to learn how to grow coffee, with the aim of improving the quality of coffee berries in general. Most farmers are quite small and have about 302 coffee trees on their plantations. In addition to coffee, the farmers also grow beans and corn to feed their families.
