About This Coffee

Gichathaini is one of three washing stations run by the Gikanda Farmers’ Cooperative Society. Located at the base of Mt. Kenya, the conditions for coffee growing are near perfect. There is abundant rainfall throughout the year, with concentrated wet periods between March-June (main crop) and October-December (early crop). The washing station itself is located on the Eastern side of Mt. Kenya National Park near the town of Katarina. This area is renowned for their deep red volcanic soils. Carefully selected ripe cherries are brought to the washing station daily, fermented, washed, then sun dried. Using rich volcanic soil and fresh water from the nearby Ragati River with gravity-fed channels, then re-circulated during processing for conservation purposes. This cooperative is made of 897 dedicated members. Elected representatives from the cooperative are involved in making decisions for the Cooperative and Gikanda society as a whole. The wet mill’s attention to detail in every step is evident in this delicious offering which we are excited to serve. Enjoy!
