In Antigua, Guatemala, volcanoes dominate the horizon and local farmers cultivate the nutrient-rich soil to grow coffees of world-renowned quality. Luis Pedro Zalaya calls this region’s coffee Hunapu, after the Mayan name for the largest volcano in the region. Luis Pedro is a fourth-generation coffee farmer and the owner of Beneficio Bella Vista, where nearly 300 farmers deliver ripe, sorted coffee that undergoes a long, cool fermentation and a thorough washing and drying. After tasting through 100 different coffees, Madcap works with Luis Pedro to pick our favorites and craft a custom Hunapu coffee, selected by us and made for you. This year, Hunapu comes from a farmer named Jose Asunción Hernández Illescas. Jose and his wife Maria Lidia Paredes have farmed their 5 hectares of land for over 20 years. A quintessential representation of the quality in Antigua, expect a coffee with great structure and acidity balanced by a syrupy, juicy sweetness. Tasting notes of honeydew, orange blossom, and vanilla make this vibrant roast one of our favorites.
