Guji Uraga is grown by farmer Mitiku Alemayhu in the ancient Guji zone of the Oromia region: an area known for its red fertile soils and high elevations. In addition to coffee, Mitiku raises cattle and grows bananas, maize, and other fruits such as avocado in addition to coffee to maintain a livable income. Using their many years of coffee knowledge, Mitiku has perfected harvesting and processing coffee cherries. The cherry is carefully picked, sorted for quality and foreign material, and dried, which takes roughly 15 days. Once the coffee is dried, it is transported onto trucks and taxied to the dry mill located 439 km away. Mercanta, our specialty coffee partner, has worked with Mitiku since 2019.
